Q: I want to increase the gold my Gold Deposit makes by using a Peasant. Can I only use one Peasant for each Gold Deposit?

You can Act as many Peasants as you want for a single Gold Deposit. But keep in mind that the Peasants must Act before the Gold Deposit does.

Q: I bought a Culture Deck, how do I split up the cards to start playing?

The cards should be split like this: Emperor, Main Deck, Temple Deck, Tokens. The Temple Deck includes every Structure that is a Temple (even Throne Temples). The Token Deck is all the White-Dot-Rarity Units.

You can also distinguish all these cards by their backsides. The Emperor has levels, bonuses, and goals listed on his backside. The Main Deck cards are listed as "Empire Index," the Temple Deck cards are listed as "Architecture," and the Token Deck cards are listed as "Advanced Training."

Q: What are the two numbers in the Gold Cost of the Temple?

The larger amount is the normal cost of the building. The other is the Renovation Cost, which requires the destruction of a Temple you have out in play in order to pay. The Renovation Cost can be thought of as breaking down a building you have already built, and reusing the foundation for something new. The restriction on the Renovation Cost is that the destroyed Temple cannot be the Required Temple on the new one you wish to build. For example, if the new Temple says, "Requires: Farmstead" then you could not renovate the Farmstead into the new Temple.

Q: I want to play a unit from my Token pile. How do I do that?

The Token Units represent generic units in your army, which your Temples produce. Using a Temple's ability will put a Token onto the field in your Empire. In order to play the Tokens you want, you need to have first built the appropriate Temple. The bottom of the Temple Card will tell you which unit it produces.

Q: I have a Hero card in my hand. How do I play it?

Unlike Token Units (that are produced from a Temple's ability), Hero cards are upgrades of a unit you already have on the field. The named unit in the Hero's Destiny mechanic will tell you what you need to produce in order to upgrade it into the Hero. Also unlike Tokens (which must be played into your Empire), a Hero can upgrade its required unit from any Location in the Battleground.

Q: When my Emperor meets the requirements to go to the next Ruler Level, when do the bonuses start to apply?

The instant that you meet the requirements, your Emperor will go to the next Ruler Level. It could be during any player's turn, or even during Combat, whenever those requirements are met, that's when the bonuses start to apply.

Q: Speaking of bonuses, are the new Ruler Level's bonuses added to the previous one(s)?

No. Only current level bonuses apply.

Q: My Emperor just leveled up and needs to kill 15 units. I already killed 6 for the last Level, so do I only need to kill 9 more?

No, you would have to kill 15 more. The Ruler Level requirements reset after each Level Up. So units killed, owning a temple for a certain amount of turns, etc. all start at 0. Some requirements, like owning a certain number of certain cards (i.e. Gold Cards), carry over simply because they are a passive count, rather than one that you must accumulate.

Q: Do culture-specific bonuses like those from my Emperor and Temples apply to the Emperor? How about Peasants?

The Emperor is still considered to by of his specific culture, and would therefore receive all the bonuses he and your Temples would give. Peasants like the "Human Peasant" from the Farmstead Temple do not have a culture, and will never receive a culture-specific bonus regardless of which culture(s) you're playing.

Q: Can just anyone pick up Equipment that's laying on the ground?

It's not the duty of your warriors to do that. That's reserved for Peasants with the Salvage ability. After they've retrieved the equipment, it can be handed off.

Q: I just picked up a weapon and I want to sell it. Do I have to take it back to my Empire first?

Equipment can be sold at any Location. But if you want to make some "House Rules" that say you need to bring it back to your Empire first, you can do that.

Q: How does a weapon's Piercing value work?

That is the value of how much of the damage is unpreventable. This means that if your target is wearing armor, or has some other active ability that prevents damage, a portion of your damage equal to the Piercing Value will go through the armor regardless.

For example, you do an attack equal to 4 damage, with 1 of it being Piercing, and your opponent has a damage prevention of 4. To do Piercing Damage, simply split up your total damage into what is Piercing, and what is not. Since your attack has a Piercing of 1, subtract that from the total damage, so your damage is 1 Piercing, 3 normal (total 4). The 1 Piercing damage is dealt to the opponent first, the 3 normal damage hits the opponent's damage prevention (which is 4). So your total damage is 1, with the other 3 being completely prevented. If you did not have that Piercing value of 1, you would not have done any damage.

Q: I just equipped a bow to my knight. Does this mean he now has a ranged attack?

Yes. However, the damage is only equal to the weapon's damage bonus. Units without ranged physical abilities (which is most non-Archer classes), are not as proficient with ranged weapons as classes like Archers and Rangers, which have ranged physical abilities. These "melee" classes are not designed for ranged attacks, and will therefore only ever do damage equal to the weapon's damage bonus, while actual ranged classes (like Archers and Rangers) can use bows to increase the damage of their ranged abilities.

To attack with the bow without a ranged ability, just Act the unit, and the ranged attack will be considered a form of Standard Attack.

Q: The durability on my armor got reduced to zero. Does that mean I discard it?

No, your armor is always repaired at the end of every player's turn.

Q: Can I use a ranged attack on a unit that's in another Location?

No, you have to be in the same Location to make a ranged attack. However, if the attack was a "Long Range" attack, then it could be used from one Location away.

Q: My unit's ability just says "Dodge" with no activation cost. How do I use it?

Dodge is a Movement Mechanic, and requires a Movement Action in order to be used. All units have a maximum of one Movement Action, and regain used Movement Actions each of their player's Rest Phases. In order to activate a Movement Mechanic like Dodge, Flurry, or others, the Movement Action must be spent. This means that if the unit uses the Movement Action to Travel to another Location, they will have no Movement Actions available to spend on the Movement Mechanic.

When activated, Movement Mechanics resolve and have their effects applied instantly.

Q: I have a unit making an attack in my opponent's Empire, which is called making a Skirmish. I also have an Emperor Bonus that applies to Skirmishing units. Does this mean that my attacking unit gets the bonus?

No, the Skirmishing referred to by the Emperor Bonus refers to a Location. Skirmishing units are all those in the Battlefield (the central Location that links all the players' Empires). Your unit is officially Raiding, because it is in an opponent's Empire, and would therefore not receive the bonus.
